Wat does Immune Compromised mean?

I was diagnosed in February 2022, and am still learning about my new MS life. I am on the Tysabri 6months, just been tested for JCV, and awaiting results. I am posting today because i have caught a cold/flu/bug and developed a cough, got antibiotics from GP, and hopefully that will fix me up. But the whole thing has me thinking/worrying about wat it means to be immune compromised. Especially because Tysabri mess's with the Infection fighting T cells. I would be interested in hearing other people's thoughts...

  1. Hi . MS treatment can be very confusing. Is your GP aware that you are in Tysabri? Does your neurologist know you were prescribed antibiotics? MS medications do bring down your immunity and they can make antibiotics less effective, but many people still respond well fairly well to them. Definitely continue to pay attention to your symptoms though and call your doctor immediately if they worsen. If your infection worsens, you might have to come off Tysabri for a while. Here is an article from one of our advocates about infections and their impact on MS: https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/biological-warfare-fighting-infection-and-ms. I thought you might find it helpful given what you are going through. I hope you recover quickly and fully and that you are negative for JVC. Keep us posted if you feel comfortable doing so. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thanks for your reply, i am feeling better, still have an occasional cough, nothing persistent. My antibiotic was amoxocillin. I never really realized how our bodys worked (immune systems). It still is a bit over my head. Still waiting on results from JCV test. I asked my nurse how long it would take to get results, she told me it would take a while, because they send my sample to somewhere like denmark, because australia pathology are unable to test it here. Maybe cause there is only 25 thousand people with MS in australia. Actually makes me feel rare.

      1. I am glad to hear you are feeling better, . I hope the JCV results come back negative. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
