Is it from MS? How to proceed?

Relatively newly diagnosed so I'm still learning the ropes (about four years now). Recently, I noticed that I have been feeling "phlegm" at the back of my throat more often (could it be just allergies?) which then made me cough more (nope, not helping) and sometimes almost choking (on nothing). Now I am finding it hard to swallow, it seems like it's going the wrong way (up nasal passage). So very thankful for an excellent Neuro Team! Reached out last night and rec'd return msg with plan to do MRI to start (for lesion comparison-was due in a couple of months anyway). Anybody else been down this road? TIA PS: Definitely doesn't help with trying to stay hydrated. Ugh

  1. Hi I am so glad to hear you are advocating and educating yourself. That is a great first step. There are a lot of "ropes" to learn, and I am sure this can be overwhelming. There is a connection between MS and allergies, I am hoping this article can help: https://multiplesclerosis.net/clinical/connection-allergies. I am so glad to hear your medical team is on this and you have a MRI scheduled. Please keep us posted on what your doctor says. I really hope you can get relief. Jill (Team Member)

    1. thank you for your link. I did receive "good" news with the MRI reporting that there is no evidence of new lesions! Now moving on to the next step to figure out the best way to alleviate the symptoms. Onward!

    2. onward!! This is great news. Please keep us posted. Jill (Team Member)

  2. Hi, ! I am sorry you are dealing with another symptom. It could be allergies and it could be related to MS (or something else entirely). In addition to the information Jill shared, I wanted to link this info on swallowing problems with MS -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/symptoms/swallowing-problems. I am glad you were proactive and reached your doctor and that they're being quick to get to the bottom of what's going on.

Keep us posted, if you feel comfortable doing so!

And, you're definitely not the only one dealing with swallowing/choking issues. Here's an article on the topic I thought you might find interesting -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/trouble-swallowing-issues. Best, Erin, Team Member.

    1. thank you for letting me know that I'm not alone with these issues. I will definitely check out that article. I am Blessed to have a great report from my MRI. When read, they did not note any new lesions at this time! So, good news, but still leaves the question of what is causing the issues. As I told another poster, we now will continue with the next step. I will push myself to remember to be an advocate for myself and not "fall thru the cracks". Hopefully, with the added information received here i will be able to find the source and come up with a way to deal with it.

    2. , yes! Keep fighting for answers and keep advocating for yourself and your health. I know it can kind of be a mixed bag when you have a good MRI result but are experiencing new or worsening symptoms. I mean, on the one hand, you're relieved. But, on the other hand, you're still wondering what's causing the issues you are experiencing. And, sometimes doctors think, "Well, your MRI is fine, so I don't know what to tell you. Come back in six months." And they kind of wash their hands of the whole thing. Not helpful. So, you keep doing what you're doing and I hope your effort pays off!

      Best, Erin, Team Member.
