How do MS attacks look?

hi guys i got diagnosed in june 2022, it all happened because i lost vision in one eye.
after they did steroid IVs on me it all went back to normal and i was good as new for months. i got on tecfidera in november and i only got some redness in the face as a side effect. basically its all going really well but recently my head has been feeling hot and thats it. like during the evening/night it gets hot and i feel hot. it doesnt exactly bother me that much so i think im fine, but im not sure what this means. ive read about attacks and i have no idea how they work. is my hot head an attack? id really appreciate some clarity on how ms works now that it's been a while after diagnosis

  1. hi! I have a lot of experience with HOT HEAD, and while I can't give you any medical advice (for which you can thank God), I can tell you how common that symptom has been for me, and how I've dealt with it. Can you tell us a little about how your hot head feels, and what you're doing to cope with it? It may or may not be a full on attack, but it's certainly a fairly common symptom. I hope you feel you can contact the doctor who diagnosed you, and discuss this symptom with them. They should be able to help you understand whether a new symptom needs treatment, or when to come back and see them or consult your own primary care physician. I think you did a good thing coming to this forum with your question, but you should probably also consult your own team of healthcare professionals. Attack or not, if you have a question, you should talk to them.

Now let's talk about your hot head! Is your scalp sweating like crazy? That's how my hot head hits me! Mine always appears when I'm exercising, either at the gym (pre-pandemic) or at home. I sweat a lot from my head, and have found that cooling devices help a lot, as does having extra towels when the temperatures are warmer, or when I'm working out. NOTHING cools me off like a wet gym towel wrapped around my neck. There are wonderful devices called "cooling scarves" that are widely available -- I get mine on Etsy! You soak them for a few minutes, and they're filled with crystals that expand and hold the water, and they can keep you cool for hours! In addition, they're also easily recharged by getting them wet again.

The name of the sweating symptom is called hyperhidrosis, which is useful because you can search for that term on line and reaad about other people's experiences with it.

I'm glad you found this group so early in your journey, and I hope you treat your MS as well as it can be treated. You're very fortunate to be on a Disease Modifying Therapy, and such a good one! When your DMT suits you, it can do you a lot of good, and I hope Tecfidera continues to be effective.

    1. hi thanks for the reply!
i dont get sweating on my scalp at all, the only thing i could describe it as is like a fever but contained in the head and neck.
it doesnt feel like a fever though, which is why i mentioned it doesnt bother me at all.

it happens basically everyday so thats why im not sure about calling it an attack...

it could also be my meds side effects but in the first few months of using it only my cheeks and ears were red, and it usually goes away after 30 mins which is what ive read is common for tecfidera.

so im not sure if its just side effects being slightly worse or...?

plus it happens with no specific trigger, ive just been laying around all day for this semester break haha

thanks for the scarf tip if it gets unbearable ill be sure to look into it 😀

  2. Hi,plainity! Thanks so much for clarifying your symptoms! While ive never used Tecfidera, I've certainly hheard of this side effect of that medication. I think your best bet is to ask your question in our forums section. Here's the link: https://multiplesclerosis.net/forums. .More of the community will see your question, especially if you give it a title such as "anybody else having Hot head with Tecfidera?" People flock to questions about medication!

I'm glad you like the idea of the cooling scarves! They're cheap, too! All the best, Therry
