Has anyone tried functional electrical stimulation (FES)?

My legs are getting more spastic. I read that Functional Electrical Stimulation can help.

FES uses low level electrical impulses to stimulate the peroneal nerve, which activates the muscles responsible for foot movement. FES devices are typically worn as a cuff below the knee.

You can program it to synchronize with your walking pattern.

Would like to hear from anyone who has tried it.

Thanks.

  1. Hi, !

Apologies for the delay in responding to your question. First, I am sorry you are dealing with increased spasticity in your legs and I think it's wise that you are looking to possible treatment options.

FES has been used a number of our community members and I want to share some of their experiences with it (pardon the abundance of links 😉 ). So, this is an older piece written by a member who has used FES -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/fes-improve-mobility. One of our contributors interviewed one of his friends about her experience with FES and the piece gets into some good detail about the process and how it works -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/foot-drop-electrical-stimulation. And here's some basic information on FES and insurance coverage and the like from the NMSS -- https://www.nationalmssociety.org/for-professionals/for-healthcare-professionals/managing-and-treating-ms/rehabilitation-therapies/functional-electrical-stimulation. It definitely can be a viable treatment option, so please do update us if you choose to give it a try!

    1. I am trying it now in PT. It definitely helps with foot drop. However, it is expensive. My PT says that insurance almost never covers it for progressive forms of MS (I have CIS) so don't get my hopes up. My insurer requires 32 sessions over three months so that's $960 in co-pays and there's no assurance that it will be approved after that.

      1. , I'm glad it's working well for you!

But, I am so sorry insurance is being a pain in the rear.

    2. I'm actually going to physical therapy next month with VA, they are going to put me through a trial with Bioness for right leg and arm. My best friend currently is using Cionic Sleeve, says its amazing. Im extremely excited about it!

      1. , how cool! I hope the trial is successful for you! Please keep us posted, if you feel comfortable doing so.

    3. Of course I definitely will!!

      1. that's great to hear that you have a new opportunity to explore, it sounds like it comes with great recommendation too. Best of luck, and I too am excited to hear how it goes as well. We're thinking of you and cheering you on!
