Not volume but comprehension.

I guess you could call it that. I think of it as related to my brain, not my ears, when I don’t understand what I hear.

YES!!! In fact, just 3 days ago I was going to a holiday performance and lost hearing in my right ear. Not a total loss, really, but sort of a muffling or tampening down of my ability to hear out of that ear. It feels "full". Thankfully, it comes and goes - so far. Here's hoping . . .

It is so frustrating, I know. All we can do is say, "Excuse me, my hearing isn't what it used to be. Can you repeat that?" I say it many times a day and folks seem to understand.

My hearing problem is just like you described. I have this strange feeling that I am several beats behind the conversation and I can't catch up and understand the noises. I know they are words, but it just sounds like noises. I don't have it all the time - just sporadically and usually on the phone.

Hi ConnieMWT! I am sorry you are experiencing this issue. As you can see from the replies, you are not alone in this. One of the hearing issue people with MS may face is difficulty understanding or interpreting speech. You can read more about why this happens in this article on various hearing issues that can be related to MS -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/hello-is-this-thing-on-hearing-impairment-and-ms/. I hope this answers your question and I also hope it helps to know that you are not the only one going through this. Best, Erin, MultipleSclerosis.net Team Member.

Yes! Someone else with the same hearing issue.
I have to focus my full attention on someone's speech to understand them. In a noisy room (music, parties and even Church) I have issues. I sometimes take five to ten words to decipher what is being said. And if I'm doing something else (as in answering a question like this I have to ask my wife to start over when she is speaking to me).
I believe my MS presented about two years before my diagnosis which was due to the loss of my ability to hear above a certain frequency.
Thanks for the article link!
