My MS Diagnosis

Back in 1985 when I was a junior in university in Nebraska, I woke up at 3am with funny vision in my right eye. It turned out to be optic neuritis, and I was admitted to St Joseph hospital.

MS never stopped me

I spent two weeks there. They did the lumbar puncture, VER, and MRI. By the time I was discharged, they told me they suspected I have MS. I had the lesions.

That never stopped me then. I completed a full 42km marathon in 1991. I taught until 2018, and completed three degrees and a masters. Got married, and had three kids.

Fast forward

Fast forward to 2011. My symptoms became worse. I lost my balance, stopped running, and suffered incontinence, as well as other classic symptoms. Got divorced. The neurologist basically told me that my condition is primary progressive MS.

Still fighting

These days I use a walker. I used to use a cane, then two, starting 2011.

I still go to the gym and workout relatively often. I lift weights to stay fit. Running is a distant memory. Falling is sadly commonplace.

I'm still fighting to maintain fitness.
