Stem cell treatment

Hi there. I have relapsing remitting MS. Although the drug I currently am on has prevented further relapses in the past year, I continue to have numbness and weakness in my right arm and hand. I also have some urinary incontinence. I have heard of stem cell therapy and am wondering if anyone has had success with it. Thanks

  1. Hi . We have an advocate who has recently undergone autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (aHSCT) and has been chronicling her journey for us. Here is a link to her first article: https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/hsct-decision. As I am sure you know, it is not an approved treatment in the United States and there are no guarantees that it will help with MS. It also will not cure you of any past progression. If it is effective, it will simply prevent your from progressive further. So, if you decide to go ahead, you will have to pay for the full procedure and travel outside the country. We have seen mixed results in this community. Some people how found it beneficial while others have seen no impact. We have not had input from members about the long-term impact. I am not sure that it has been an accessible treatment long enough to see long-term results. Here is a more general article from our editorial team about HSCT that includes a link to some clinical trials: https://multiplesclerosis.net/clinical/hsct-research. I hope you get input from others in the community and that this helps. Let us know what you decide if you don't mind. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
