Hi, !
First off, I am sorry you find yourself here. I wish no one had to receive a diagnosis of MS. And let's just say that yes, it sucks. It does. And it's not fair. But, please know you are not alone in this. There are a number of people with MS diagnosed in their teens and early 20's and they know what it's like to have your whole life ahead of you, only to be hit by what seems to be an insurmountable roadblock. And, frankly, I want to limit hitting you with too many unhelpful positive platitudes.
I do want to suggest that you check your social media of choice and see if you can find others teens with MS sharing their stories. I can link some resources for you, but they will be, admittedly, a bit corny. You want to connect with other people that get it and well, due to your age, the number of helpful resources out there is probably gonna be on TikTok and the like. Of course, please fact check any info you get on sites like TikTok, for your safety, and avoid doomscrolling. There's a fine line between being well informed and being scared about "what ifs".
Also, one of our contritbutors was diagnosed at age 14. She is in her 30's now, but she has written about her diagnosis here -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/living-with-ms/diagnosed-teenager-impact. Here's her bio -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/community/experts/calie-wyatt. And Jackie was diagnosed at age 22 -- https://multiplesclerosis.net/community/experts/jackie-zimmerman. Also, here's a short clip about a teenager with MS that you might find worth the watch -- https://youtu.be/tm5Tolk2jME. There's definitely teens out there like you, dealing with this diagnosis.
And, hey. It's okay to take some time to adjust or be ticked off or sad or whatever you want to feel. This is a big diagnosis, but you are more than this diagnosis. And you can have a wonderful, full life, even with MS. I know you didn't ask for this and if I could wish it away for you and every other person with MS, I would.
But, please know we're here for you. This isn't what you wanted, but you don't have to do this alone. And I do very much hope you are able to enjoy some of the senior year festivities and milestones.
Feel free to post here anytime, even if you just need a place to vent.
Best, Erin, Team Member.
