If the cause is optic neuritis, the inflamed optic nerve will cause all types of distortions--dimness, color change, reduced field of vision, splotches, jumpiness, etc. A neurologist can take a close look into the eye and see the inflammation if it is there. If new MS symptoms occur with it, or other MS symptoms are intensified, it's probably a flareup and is usually treated by steroids. I used to have optic neuritis from time to time in my earlier years of MS, and a dose of steroids cleared it up (for me, anyway). If not optic neuritis, spots could be floaters https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/eye-floaters/symptoms-causes/syc-20372346 It can be scary and certainly annoying.
