Assisting Devices

Good afternoon everyone. Question is how does everyone deal with leg weakness and numbness feeling while jogging or anytime i have a elevated body temp. Mines to the point where the tip of my shoe will catch the pavement and i tumble to the ground. Has anyone used any mobility enhancers like knee braces or walking assisters? Any recommendations?

  1. That sounds dangerous, . I hope you get some responses that help, but it might be wise to trade jogging for something that gives you a bit of stability, like and exercise bike or an elliptical. I know how hard it is to give up jogging though. Runners are a pretty determined bunch. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hi, ! Like Lori mentioned, this seems like a pretty worrisome development, especially if you want to keep jogging! I would definitely talk to your physician and maybe even a physical therapist to see if there might be some options for strengthening your balance and muscles. That said, MS affecting the nerves may be harder to combat, so hopefully, other community members may have some helpful suggestions for braces or assistive devices. And (you may already do this) I suggest having your phone on you during your jogs so you can contact someone if you run into real trouble during a run.

      1. - i have had to learn how to walk four or five times. It's just not working this time. Before I would use a walker for awhile and then cane for awhile and then I was unsteadily walking and had to get used to walking to the bus stops. This time, it is just not working. I have a rollator and a cane (I've had 9 PT training sessions once a year). i just am not able to get it together at 72. I have to think of something because I'm not done yet.

        1. - I've been trying to keep up with my exercises. I think I have been doing some of these exercises for years, but I've never noticed any buildup of muscles. Now that the weather is getting better, I might finally move from this place. It's been like four years, but my husband, who retired four years ago, keeps stalling. I can't keep staying here when I have waited all my life to retire to southern Florida. It's now or never! I'm going to have to hire an attendant to help me with my move. Does anyone know the best place to hire them plus I'll need them to travel with me on the train.

        2. Hi Colette, I would suggest looking at the National MS Society's doctor locator. It's called a Doctor Locator but honestly, they have pretty much every resource you can imagine there and you can filter by your state. I would try filtering the category to "home care and housing" and the support type to "chore and personal care assistance." https://www.nationalmssociety.org/Resources-Support/Find-Doctors-Resources. You can also speak to a patient navigator on their site to try and further narrow down your search for an attendant. I hope that helps! 🧡 Kayleigh, MultipleSclerosis.net team

      2. Im so sorry something you love is being taken away like that 🙁

I use a cane and forearm crutches for walking, I tend to use an exercise bike more than running because of my clumsiness like what you have described.

I am trying to do pilates to hopefully train my legs to extend better while moving, i dont know im just trying a bunch of different things!

        1. Pilates can be wonderful for your whole body, . I hope it helps and that you are able to walk without your cane and forearm crutches one day. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
